Senior School Tour - Foynes and Shannon

June 17th 2010

On Thursday June 17th 2010, 3rd to 6th class set off on their annual School Tour. This year the theme of the tour was "Flight".

Our first stop was Foynes Flying Boat Museum. The Foynes Flying Boat Museum is dedicated to recalling that historic time from 1939 to 1945, when Foynes, Ireland, became the center of the aviation world. On July 9th 1939, the Pan Am Flying Boat, the "Yankee Clipper" landed at Foynes. This was the first commercial passenger flight on a direct route from the USA to Europe. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, this quiet little town on the Shannon became the focal point for air traffic on the North Atlantic.

We then took the twenty minute journey across the Shannon Estuary on the Tarbert to Kililmer car ferry. We also took in Shannon airport on our way..

Then it was on to Air Adventure in Shannon. We were introduced to the the basics of aviation in a fun and educational way through mulitmedia learning, hands on activities and flight simulation

After some food and all important shopping we returned to Oola.
